A New Instrument: Navigating Singing and Testosterone

Recently, I was on TikTok Live, and someone asked me an important question: "What advice do you have for a singer thinking about starting testosterone?" It's a crucial topic for many trans individuals who want to explore the changes that come with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) while continuing their passion for singing. So, let's dive into the world of singing and testosterone. As always, you can either read this blog post, or watch the video above!

Understanding the Journey

First and foremost, if you're considering starting testosterone (often referred to as "T" by the transgender community), it's crucial to understand that this journey is deeply personal and unique to you. As Scotty and many others rightly mentioned during my live session, the transition can be distressing. You're not alone in feeling this way, and it's entirely okay to have mixed emotions.

Be Patient and Kind to Yourself

One of the most important pieces of advice I can offer is to be patient and kind to yourself. Starting testosterone is a big step, and it will definitely impact your singing voice, but you wouldn't be taking this leap if the benefits didn't outweigh the costs. You're starting testosterone because you want some or all of the changes that will come along with it. However, it's important to remember that you're not losing your ability to sing; instead, you're embarking on a journey to rediscover and relearn your instrument, much like switching from the violin to an upright bass.

Imagine you've spent your whole life mastering the violin, becoming a virtuoso in the process. Then, one day, someone hands you an upright bass. The transition can be challenging, but the fundamental skills you've acquired are transferable. You've still got a musical instrument in your hands, even if it feels unfamiliar at first.

As you start your testosterone journey, you may not perform at your best immediately, and that's perfectly normal. Just like learning to play the upright bass takes time and practice, so does adapting to your changing vocal range. You might not be able to hit the same notes or perform the same songs as effortlessly as before, but that's part of life's evolution for every singer.

Discovering Your New Instrument

The key takeaway here is that as the effects of testosterone become more pronounced, you'll essentially be working with a new instrument. It may seem daunting, but it's also incredibly exciting. You'll find that your voice gains a unique depth, resonance, and character that you couldn't achieve before.

The experience of being a transgender singer on T is like embarking on an artistic journey of rediscovery. You'll have the opportunity to explore and experiment with a completely new vocal range. Embrace this change and use it as an opportunity for growth.

A Supportive Community

One of the most beautiful aspects of the trans community is the support we offer each other. As you venture into the world of singing on testosterone, remember that you're not alone. There are countless others who've been where you are now and can offer guidance, encouragement, and understanding.

Don't hesitate to connect with people who can relate to your experience. Whether it's through social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or local transgender support groups, there are communities out there eager to share their knowledge and lend a helping hand, and plenty of transgender singers on T who are happy to share their experiences.

If you want to engage in a live discussion and ask your own questions, you can follow me on TikTok or join my Instagram channel, Trans Vocal Explorers. I try to go live every Monday afternoon (eastern time) to address various voice-related topics.

Conclusion

In conclusion, starting testosterone as a singer is undoubtedly a unique and sometimes challenging journey. However, it's also an incredibly rewarding experience. You're not losing your singing ability, but rather reshaping and enhancing it. Remember to be patient, kind, and open to the possibilities of your new instrument.

As you progress through your transition, you'll discover a world of vocal potential you may have never imagined. Your voice will evolve and take on its distinct, incredible qualities, adding an exciting dimension to your identity as a singer.

So, go ahead and embrace the changes that testosterone brings to your voice. Your journey is personal, and your unique sound will undoubtedly leave a mark in the world of music. Sing proudly, embrace your transformation, and let your voice shine through. You've got this!
