Gender-Affirming Voice 101: Where to Start?
Sep 11, 2024Welcome to Gender-Affirming Voice 101! In this instalment, Part 7: Where to Start, we’ll explore the first steps you can take to begin your journey toward creating a voice that feels safe, comfortable, and authentically you.
The Journey So Far
If you've been following along, you know we've covered a lot of ground in this series, from vocal anatomy to vocal characteristics and beyond. But with so much information at your fingertips, you might be wondering: Where do I even begin?
Overcoming Overwhelm: Start Simple
It's easy to feel overwhelmed when starting something new, especially when there’s so much to learn. My advice? Keep it simple. The best way to start is by getting to know your voice in a neutral setting—where success or failure isn’t the focus. Here, exploration is key.
Establishing Your Practice
To familiarize yourself with your voice and how you like to work with it, I recommend starting with regular warm-ups. Try to set aside time a few times a week, or even daily if you can. Warm-ups are a great way to deepen your understanding of your voice, build a practice habit, and embrace the playful side of voice work. These steps are essential for success in gender-affirming voice work.
If you’re not sure where to start, I’ve got you covered. I offer a free follow-along voice warm-up that you can access here. It’s a great resource to help you ease into your practice.
