Is my transition "done" now?
Jul 22, 2024Now that I’ve had two gender-affirming surgery, is my transition “done” now?
Hi, I’m Renée, I’m a gender-affirming voice teacher, and I am also a transgender individual, specifically of the nonbinary variety and some have asked if my transition is finished now that I’ve had my surgeries, or if I have any other gender-affirming plans for myself.
First, I want to make sure it’s clear to the non-trans people watching this (if there are any) that trans people are not a monolith. We have different reasons for transitioning, different expectations from our transition, and different relationships to our bodies and to how our bodies move through the world.
Some people have a destination in mind when they transition, but I don’t.
For my transition, I’ve always been playing it by ear and going at the pace that works for me.
I’ve mentioned before that I have chronic pain, and because it was very severe from 2010 until 2018, I was never able to consider a medical transition because it was just plainly too daunting to take on more medical intervention.
I might decide to start hormones someday or change my name, or my hair, and hopefully my clothes omg lol
But I don’t think I’ll ever see myself as having “finished” my transition. Transition for me is about a recurring process of discovering: who am I now?
Like, I said, this may not be the case for everyone, but it’s my approach.
So if you are trans, tell me about your approach to transition. Do you have a fixed goal, are you feeling it out? Or something in between?
