meowing for voice feminization

Hey there, it's Renée, your friendly neighbourhood gender-affirming voice teacher! Today, I have an exciting exercise to share with you. Are you ready to uncover a surprising and effective technique for achieving a bright, feminine voice? Well, hold on to your cat ears because we're about to step into the world of meowing. Yes, you heard that right – meowing like a cat! In this comprehensive blog post, I'll guide you through the power of meowing and how it can revolutionize your voice training. Get ready to embrace your inner catgirl and discover the magic that lies within this unconventional approach.

The Magic of Meowing: Silly but Effective

You may be skeptical, and that's completely understandable. Meowing might seem a bit silly, but I assure you, there's solid reasoning behind it. Meowing can give you the remarkable ability to tap into the high and bright qualities in your voice that are often challenging to achieve through traditional methods. It can provide a unique and easy pathway to unlocking the feminine voice you desire.

So, let's break it down step by step. Here's how to harness the power of meowing for your voice feminization journey:

1. Low Meow Technique: To begin, create a low meow in the comfortable part of your speaking range. If you're not sure what that means, you can watch the video above for a demonstration. This meow creates the bright shape that you may have struggled to achieve using other exercises. We're going to hold this shape as we move into the next step.

2. Adding the "Yuh": Next, incorporate an Ariana Grande-style "yuh" sound after the meow. The "yuh" is what will help you link the bright qualities of the meow to your speech. I have found that it can be a difficult to go straight from meow to speech, so I added this intermediary step to help bridge the gap.

3. Speaking with Meow Qualities: Now, here's the exciting part. Once you're able to maintain the shape of your meow when you say "yuh", try speaking a short phrase while maintaining those qualities. Start with some things you would say every day like "hi, how are you?" or your coffee order. This step helps you integrate the bright voice shape into your everyday speech, resulting in a consistently bright and feminine voice.

Demonstration and Tips: Meowing Made Easy

If you're a little confused, never fear! To illustrate the power of meowing, I've prepared a demonstration just for you. In the video above, I'll guide you through the step-by-step process, ensuring that you have something to follow along with.

Now, as you venture into the realm of meowing, there are a few tips I'd like to share to ensure your success:

1. Beware of Head Voice Meows: While practicing the low meow, be mindful not to transition into a head voice meow. Maintaining a low pitch ensures a natural and authentic quality when applied to your spoken phrases. So, keep your meows grounded and embrace the power of changing the resonance of your speech register.

2. Practice Makes Perfect: Like any new skill, mastering meowing requires practice and repetition. Incorporate regular meowing exercises into your voice training routine, allowing your vocal tract and muscles around your larynx to adapt and strengthen over time. Consistency is key, so don't be discouraged if progress feels gradual at first.

Expanding Your Horizons: A Deeper Exploration of Voice Qualities

While meowing is a fantastic technique on its own, I understand that some of you may crave a deeper understanding of voice qualities, pitch, and resonance. If that's the case, I encourage you to check out my previous blog on pitch and resonance isolation, where I delve into these topics in greater detail.
