The benefits of listening to different types of voices
May 15, 2023The other day, I held an office hour with students from my Trans Vocal Exploration e-course. One student, Rey, made a wonderful comment and gave me permission to share it with you:
"I think the biggest thing that I've been doing so far is trying to notice different people's voices. I think the thing that's helped me the most is realizing that a lot of different people of various genders have all kinds of voices. And I'd still like to work on my voice, but it makes me realize my voice is more okay than I thought. Like, I listened to a recording of my voice because I had to for a meeting to take notes and I was dreading that. I was like, "I don't want to hear myself," but it was okay. And I was kind of surprised by that. So that's a really positive thing that I've got out of [this course] so far."
I think that as much as this work is definitely about altering the voice to better align with the gender and this gives gender euphoria, I think it's also about undoing these cis heteronormative ideals of what voice is supposed to be. And if this work leads you to the conclusion that you're maybe great the way you are, I love that, I want that to happen.
