So you want to alter your voice... where do you start?
Oct 06, 2021So you've come out as trans, you've changed your name, your hair, and your clothes, and now you're ready to change your speaking voice - but where do you even start?
This is a question I get from so many students!
When you start to see how much voice information is out there, it can feel like an insurmountable hill to climb. In my teaching practice, I have found that students who spend some time opening their ears and developing sensitivity to vocal sounds around them and vocal sounds within them have much higher rates of success.
That's why one of the first modules in Trans Vocal Exploration is called "Developing Awareness". Here's a quick overview of what I cover in that module:
The lessons in this module are:
- What is "developing awareness" and why is it important?
- Performing a voice audit
- Keeping a sound journal
- How to figure out what your target voice is
- Inspiration
Each lesson in this module is centred around deepening the student's ability to hear the nuance in vocal sounds, both from what they hear in their everyday life and what they are already capable of doing with their voice.
When students take the time to really dig into this module, the rest of their trans voice work is much easier.
