You Already Have What It Takes to Change Your Voice (Here’s Why)
Jan 30, 2025If you’re exploring gender-affirming voice training, you might be asking yourself, “Can I really do this? Do I have what it takes to change my voice?” Let me stop you right there because I’m here to tell you: YES, you absolutely can.
Hi, I’m Renée, a gender-affirming voice teacher, and in my years of working with clients, I’ve noticed a common myth: Some people have the natural ability to change their voice, and others just don’t. Let’s put that myth to rest because it couldn’t be further from the truth.
The reality? You are already the expert at modifying your voice—you just don’t know it yet.
In the video below, I’ll show you how trans voice training works, focusing on a powerful tool called resonance. Plus, I’ll share simple voice feminization and voice masculinization exercises to help you take your first steps. Watch now:
Resonance: The Key to Voice Feminization and Masculinization
One of the most powerful tools in transgender voice training is a concept called resonance—and guess what? You already use it every time you speak. Resonance is what makes your voice sound brighter or darker, and it’s one of the key factors that can make your voice sound more traditionally feminine or masculine.
Here’s a quick analogy: Think of your voice like a musical instrument. Your vocal folds (the part of your throat that vibrates when you speak) create a sound, but the shape and size of your vocal tract (everything from your throat to your mouth) determine how that sound resonates. This is a lot like how different string lengths on a ukulele produce different tones.
Every time you adjust the size or shape of your vocal tract—by moving your tongue, lips, or even your throat—you’re changing your resonance. And you already do this naturally when you speak different vowels, like “ee,” “ah,” and “oh.”
You’re Already an Expert at Modifying Resonance
Still not convinced? Let’s prove it.
Say these vowels out loud with me: “Ee, eh, ah, oh, ooh.” Notice how your tongue moves, your lips shift, and your throat adjusts to create each sound? That’s resonance in action!
This is the same skill we use in voice feminization and voice masculinization training to shape your voice. For example:
- If you want a brighter, more traditionally feminine sound, you can practice what I call “ee-ification.”
- If you prefer a darker, more traditionally masculine tone, you can try “oh-ification.”
In the video above, I’ll guide you through these simple exercises step by step so you can start modifying your resonance today.
